The Welder
Notes from WELD's Laboratory
Do You Have Rack Envy?
As a dirt-poor raft guide roaming the country, I was living out of my SUV and the cheap box trailer I had built myself on a $150 frame. I needed some sort of storage space for the raft, the kayak, the mountain bike, the snowboard, the tent, the kitchen, and so on — something that wouldn’t take up the vehicle interior space, something easy.
The trailer worked fine, but everywhere I went I had rack envy.
I coveted the simplicity of roof racks and rocket boxes, the purposeful design of sport-specific apparatus for hauling boats and bikes. There’s just something beautiful about a car with outdoor gear elegantly stacked on top or hanging off the back.
Fast-forward to present day, and that feeling returns, but for a different reason. WELD was ecstatic to help out Yakima with a recent brand-building video project. The storied maker of cargo and hauling systems is making a new initiative to tell its brand story and connect with the people and places that go along with a lifestyle that requires a little BYO-outdoor gear.
That’s how the WELD video team came up with this:
Do you have a Yakima rack? What do you haul? Does this video speak to you and your lifestyle?
