The One Certainty In Search: Mutation

I am torn between seeing Internet search as a blessing or a curse to those of us in the digital marketing industry. But regardless of how I feel at the end of the day, one thing I remain certain of is that our clients can benefit greatly from the pain we WELDers put ourselves through keeping up with search.

On the one hand, you see, it seems at times that Google’s intention is to never let us search optimizers get comfortable enough to feel as though we understand our jobs. One look at This Week In Search, posted every Friday on the Google Blog, and you can see why.

A year ago, you couldn’t get us to stop talking about “universal” search. These days, our concern is “real-time” search. Has the web search function and experience changed that much?

And Then Search Engines Indexed Refrigerators

Facebook privacy controls: Worth getting to know

Facebook privacy controls: Worth getting to know

I just finished spending some time going through my Facebook privacy settings, probably more time than I’ve ever spent looking at them.

It’s not that I’m worried about prospective employers running social background checks or a high school girlfriend with a grudge.

No, I’m worried about what the web’s search engines will see when they come looking through the windows.

And they are coming.

Google Docs Adds Folder Sharing — It’s About Time

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 by Mariah Hibarger

If you have never gone through the frustration of sharing 100 Google documents individually, you will likely have no interest in the new Google Docs folder-sharing function. However, if you are like me, carefully categorizing every single Google document that you create or have been granted access to share, or you frequently have to coordinate the sharing of countless Google Documents, Sites, Calendars, the works — well you know who you are, and you know how exciting this is.

I think there are a lot of us saying, “It’s about bloody time!” Honestly, what took Google so long to make this happen? It seemed like a simple enough concept to me. But, let’s not dwell on the negative criticism, let’s just celebrate that Google has added yet another useful function to their, dare I say,  “awesome” arsenal of free Google Apps.

You can now share an entire folder worth of Google Docs with the people you know and love.

Here’s how it works (and it’s not rocket science, folks):

Search Is Anything But Static

It was a revelation of sorts for us, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that we have to educate businesses about it, too. Whether it’s a comprehensive digital agency like ours, or a focused search engine optimization consultant, the work and service is not — can not be, in fact — a single transaction or product.

Forgive the colloquialism, but it ain’t like buying an orange.

Internet search, and the work of bolstering your organization’s chances of getting found online, is an ongoing, ever-changing project.

Did you know that Google’s search algorithm is modified, on average, about 90 times each quarter? At any given time, Google engineers are running 20 to 50 experiments in search innovation, according to MediaPost coverage of a recent Google briefing. (more…)

Does Your Website Have A Story?

When it comes to captivating our fellow hairless monkeys, there’s really no substitute for an old-fashioned story. If I can paint a picture that bursts from the beginning and raises the stakes throughout the enthralling middle, you’ll be on the edge of your seat and rooting for the characters when it comes time for the ending.

And I’m not just talking about Stephen King or J.K. Rowling here.

I’m talking about your website. (more…)

Positive Press For Sentiment Analysis

You’ll read this post and make up your mind about how you feel about the technology. But if you describe those feelings anywhere on the Internet, well, we’ll know about it. See, that’s what our technology topic for today does — it listens for the sentiment in what you’re saying.

My intuition is that, within the next 18 months, sentiment analysis will be just as familiar to you as any other kind of search. Sentiment analysis tools round up what people are saying about your company or product on the web, and determine whether what they’re saying is negative or positive. There are several companies offering such tools, but in this post I’m going to focus on Scout Labs.

We’ve been using Scout Labs for 3 months on behalf of a client that’s in a highly competitive business-to-business market. We experienced some difficulty with the application, and when we submitted a bug report, I was pleased to get a rapid response. Then, I read a New York Times article about sentiment analysis, and when I realized the person who responded to my bug report was being quoted there — and happened to be Vice President of Product — I set out to get an interview for this post.
