So, Is It OK To Sell On Social Networks?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009 by Reid Williams

Razorfish Graphs On Social Network Brand EngagementThere’s an ongoing debate here at the WELD Global Headquarters about whether people who sign up for online social networks really want to receive sales messages. We know that social media users readily interact with businesses and brands just like their friends, but do they actually buy products and services as a result of that?

This is a pretty critical question — especially if you’re in a business like ours, recommending and executing digital marketing strategies such as, say, getting a client’s organization active on Facebook and Twitter.

So, on the one hand, there’s success to be found in marketing where the crowd gathers — but not if the crowd is explicitly gathering someplace where they expect to be free from marketing messages. That’s the concern on one side of the debate, anyway.

Fortunately, there are researchers attempting to resolve this debate. What concerns me, however, and what became the impetus for this post, is the possible hyperbole used in reporting the results of this research. Anything seem odd (or just plain wrong) about these charts shown here?

And Then Search Engines Indexed Refrigerators

Facebook privacy controls: Worth getting to know

Facebook privacy controls: Worth getting to know

I just finished spending some time going through my Facebook privacy settings, probably more time than I’ve ever spent looking at them.

It’s not that I’m worried about prospective employers running social background checks or a high school girlfriend with a grudge.

No, I’m worried about what the web’s search engines will see when they come looking through the windows.

And they are coming.

How To Connect Your Business Facebook Page And Twitter Account In 5 Minutes Or Less

A new application connects Facebook Page updates to Twitter accounts — and it's a snap.

A new application connects Facebook Page updates to Twitter accounts — and it's a snap.

It might be one small step for social media gurus, but it’s one giant step for the tech-challenged WELD account executive.

What does an English major have to offer a tech-savvy digital ad agency like WELD? Judging by our current employee ratio, with 50% of WELD’s employees holding a Bachelor’s degree in English, I’m thinking I must add some value to this digital, acronym dominated environment (ADE).

“What?” you might be asking. (more…)

Why Twitter’s Monetization Plans For Businesses Shouldn’t Work

Thursday, August 6th, 2009 by Reid Williams

Twitter got all dressed up last week, the type of shave-and-a-haircut sprucing that you’d do, too, if you were about to shake someone’s hands and ask him for money.

Before too long (read: very soon), Twitter will offer paid services, ostensibly to businesses and possibly to all of us.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that this monetization model shouldn’t work at all. I’ll explain, of course. (more…)

Are you following WELD on Twitter?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 by Reid Williams

Maybe the more appropriate question is, “Are you on Twitter yourself?”

Don’t stress too much if you’re not; there are only about 8 million people currently using it. And that’s only because Oprah and Ashton Kutcher talked about it this month and a million people joined up as a result.

Twitter is a micro-blogging platform. It allows you to post updates — limited to 140 characters or less — on what you’re doing, what you’re reading, what you’re thinking, whatever. People “follow” you if they think you’re interesting. And you can follow people that you find interesting.

Here are some WELDers you might find “tweeting.” Click the link to visit their Twitter page:

  • @WELDlife — Founder and Chief Operating Officer George Rogers
  • @BrandoNRG — Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer Brandon Holmes
  • @KD_WELD — Video Manager Keith Doherty
  • @jbeezer — Executive Administrator Jenny Becksted
  • @MattSmink — This WELDer extraordinaire does it all.
