What Is An ‘Agency,’ Really?

Friday, June 5th, 2009 by Reid Williams

WELD is by no means an “advertising agency” in the traditional sense. We do strive, however, to redefine what it means to be an “agency.”

What’s the definition of an agency?

Historically, we’re talking about the one-stop-shop for advertising and marketing, an organization capable of media buys (think TV spots and billboards), market strategy and campaign planning, and producing the creative content and/or orchestrating that work among specialty shops.

But little guys like us, we can’t do all that.

We’re probably best categorized along the lines of one of those boutiques, given our specialization in the digital space.

Practice what you preach

You can’t have a website until you really understand the business’s unique offering. This  is how we advise clients in strategy sessions, so we should probably follow our own counsel, right?

For the past 18 months, since WELD became its current incarnation, some people have pointed out the irony that a digital marketing firm doesn’t have its own website.

But to be honest, we weren’t ready.

We needed to explore and improve our marketing capabilities.

We had to bond the the human capital that is WELD.

Processes had to be invented and refined.

We had to prove to ourselves that we could solve real business problems, that we had something of real value to offer the marketplace.

And, honestly, it was well worth it.

Now we know our strengths — thorough, integrated digital campaigns, focused on quick business results.

We know which clients for whom we work best (CEOs and marketing directors of medium-sized businesses who are ready to make aggressive efforts to grow).

We’ve screwed up, too. But it’s important to fail early and fail often when you’re after long-term success.

We learn more every day.

Here’s to hoping you’ll invite us to share it with you.
